While combing for clues in my genealogical research today I found information from the enlistment for a (possible) kinsman for Federal service in 1861. His occupation is given as "loafer." It makes me think his pa wanted him to join up. Young Preston was 18.
Here's an article about the 1900 census and the occupational entries some enumerators were submitting. My favorite is the wife of the professional "Idler." Her occupation was "Washing and Wishing."
