The California titles give examples of issues that arose when I was compiling my spreadsheet of the Google Newspaper Archives. The Arcadia Bulletin is known as the Arcadia Tribune in the January-June 1940 issues and in August 1940 the paper included is the Arcadia Bulletin. So when I have a title in parentheses, it refers to the title I saw when I opened the link.
A glaring example is the Lyon County Reporter. If you click on the link for that title, you'll see The Review of Rock Rapids, Iowa, for 1916. The Gridley Herald of Gridley, California, follows, beginning in 1922. This is followed by the Spirit of Jefferson Farmer's Advocate from Charles Town, West Virginia, beginning in 1949. That switches back to the Lyon County Reporter of Rock Rapids, Iowa, in 1992.
When I use et al, it's because there is a cluster of newspapers with almost identical names, all from the same town and almost certainly all variations of the newspaper's name through the years. The Journal and Argus from Petaluma appears in the J's in Google's archives, so it is listed separately. The Petaluma Argus, Petaluma Daily Argus, Petaluma Journal and Argus, and Petaluma Weekly Argus are all next to each other in the P's so I just lumped them together to save some keystrokes.
