I walked through downtown Jeff City yesterday morning. It was a cold morning with heavy cloud cover. A couple of gift shops had Christmas decorations on their storefronts and it almost seemed as if it could snow. It didn't; in fact, the day warmed up quite nicely when the sun came out. But it reminded me of Christmas Eve day in 2010. It was snowing heavily and we'd come to town in order that my parents could catch a train. We got there early enough that Dad could park in the small lot and then we all went for coffee at a local bistro.
The proprietor was doing a brisk business but he assumed that this would be the peak for the day. It was Christmas Eve and it was snowing. After our coffee, we went to the station and Mother and Dad headed off for Christmas in Chicago with her brother and family. Mother was wearing a full-length beaver coat that had been her mother's. It was very festive and it almost seems like a time warp looking back on it.
I looked in the window at the Coffee Zone yesterday morning. It was packed and seeing that was a satisfying end to my morning nostalgia. Maybe LohMan and I should have a Christmas Eve morning tradition of stopping in there.
