This is a remarkably moving piece of music from the Gettysburg soundtrack, which was composed by Randy Edelman.
My great-grandfather was a child in 1861 but his five older brothers all served in Ohio regiments during the Civil War. Great-great-great Uncle Joe, with the 114th Ohio Infantry, died of disease during the Vicksburg siege. He had three daughters but two died before he did and the other never had children. Great-great-great Uncle John from my grandmother's line also died in the war. The 16th Illinois Infantry eventually marched with Sherman to the sea but Uncle John was killed by sniper fire near Columbia, Tennessee, in 1862.
Men of honor, I would hope. They died too young to prove otherwise.
