A kinswoman mentioned that her grandfather was a miller in Bernadotte, Illinois. I've never heard of the place before. It was named after the Frenchman, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, who became king of Sweden (and Norway) in the Napoleonic era. The town was more or less razed during World War II in order to expand the training ground for Camp Ellis (another place I've never heard of). It's on the Spoon River, which I have heard of. Thank you, Edgar Lee Masters.
I don't know if there was a French or Swedish inclination in this Western Illinois community that made them choose that name.
There is/was also a Bernadotte in Minnesota. Inclinationwise, here is a clue:
Sven's other brother Jan Jacob Engelbrektsson moved to Bernadotte Minnesota, farmed and raised a son named Erik Magnus Engelbrektsson.
