I can't tell you the story of the romance or marriage of my great-aunt Ruby and her husband, Lauren. They moved to New Jersey during the Depression and he died out there. They had their share and more of sorrow. I got to know Aunt Ruby because she moved back to the Midwest when she retired. By then her husband and children were dead (the daughter in infancy and the son in young adulthood, courtesy of leukemia).
My grandmother's baby sister, Aunt Ruby lived to be 96 and I had plenty of opportunities to laugh at her stories and enjoy her company. Here is a studio portrait she and Uncle Lauren had done when they were young. A handsome couple, frozen in time.

Valentines.
