Memory bank, October 25

Francis J.L. Beckman, you got your 15 minutes of fame, didn't you? On his 63rd birthday, October 25, 1938, the Archbishop of Dubuque (Iowa) told a Catholic women's conference that swing music put our nation's young people on a "primrose path to hell."

Actually he was also famous for getting duped in a gold mine swindle and involving the diocese's finances to the tune of over a half-million dollars. Jump, jive and no jail.

(There's the Louis-Keely version on Youtube, too, but I picked this one to show swing is still going strong. Live!)
