This is the 145th anniversary of The Battle of Westport, which saw 30,000 troops engaging at an area which is now part of Kansas City, Missouri. A cool thing about these photos is the realization of how much green space is in KC.
The battle is depicted in one of the lunettes on the second floor of the Missouri State Capitol. The artist is N.C. Wyeth. He has two Civil War battle lunettes here. The other is the Battle of Wilson's Creek. The image below is cropped so you don't see the half-moon shape of the painting.
You can see a .jpg that is 10 times larger by following links at the Wikipedia article about the battle. To do a little justice to Mr. Wyeth, you could do that (or just click on the image I posted). To do even more justice to him, visit the Missouri Capitol!
The Wikipedia entry also has a "Who's Who" of well-known participants in the battle. Do all states do that -- cast their nets widely to claim some kinship with famous people -- or is just a Midwestern thing?
