The Columbia Missourian did a feature on a local "earthship home." Waste tires filled with dirt are used to build load-bearing walls. A single tire requires 300 pounds of dirt that is tamped in with a sledgehammer. It took the homeowners/builders four years just to fill enough tires to frame the house.
You can own an earthship that's already completed. There are quite a few of them for sale in New Mexico, which is where the earthship movement was launched. The first one on the list puts me in mind of an abandoned gas station. The setting might have something to do with that. Will Leslie Howard drop by for coffee and conversation?
Before you commit, try an earthship on for size. Take a vacation in Taos. Better yet, have a family reunion there. Then when you build your earthship, your people will already know if they want to come for a visit.
