We came this close to disconnecting our landline today. For three months the phone company has billed us for Internet service we did not order. First indication that we were even "customers" was when the bill showed up. Three times LohMan has talked to the telco and asked to have the charge removed.
We are customers hanging by a narrow thread, that being the idea that we might need the landline telephone for an emergency. Featurewise we don't have long-distance service and, as of this morning, there is a block on our account to stop any third-party billing.
It's an odd phenomenon, the evolution of the telephone in the home. LohMan grew up on a rural party line. I can remember when my grandparents got a dial telephone. I can remember when we moved to a town whose claims to fame included the fact that it offered direct distance dialing (you didn't have to get an operator to make a long-distance call). I can remember when it seemed important when the telephone rang.
But that last memory is getting pretty darn faint.
