When I was growing up we watched "The Huntley-Brinkley Report." It was 15 minutes long and was half of the evening news. You also had your local news-weather-sports, which was 15 minutes long. Enough of that!
Walter Cronkite came to mind a few weeks ago. We were watching "The Last of the Breed," a DVD of a 2007 concert featuring Ray Price, Asleep at the Wheel, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. Ray Price, then 81, stands there singing to open the show. Something about his hair, suit and stature made me say, "He looks like Walter Cronkite."
Walter Cronkite may have been the last of that breed of television journalists. Charles Collingwood, Eric Sevareid, Douglas Edwards, Frank McGee, Howard K. Smith. People with some gravitas who, for the most part, reserved their sneering for off-camera moments.
Goodnight, Walter. And goodnight to the national news.*
*This is a quote from me, but it may not be exact. I said it about 30 years ago.
