Juneteenth

June 19th is recognized as Emancipation Day in 31 states. The first Juneteenth celebration occurred in Galveston, Texas, in 1865. The town's celebration lasts the better part of week nowadays

Although he proclaimed Emancipation, Abraham Lincoln didn't live to see it as a time of rejoicing. Thomas Hart Benton was commissioned to paint this mural which hangs in Page Library on the campus of Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo.
