Ear envy

Today is the anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. I needn't remind you that he is revered for the many witty, profound and moving things he said during the course of his life. This story was new to me:
During the Civil War, the rebels captured 40 mules and an army general. When Abraham Lincoln heard the news, he said, "I'm sorry to lose those mules." 
Which got me to thinking about mules. The Natural Superiority of Mules by John Hauer is out of print. Parts of it can be read on Google Books. A quick overview on the value of the mule was written by Hauer and it appeared in the Saturday Evening Post some years ago. You can read about "ear envy" in this piece.
