The Case of the Lonely Eloper

Merle is a young heiress whose personality has been squelched by her controlling aunt. She has the social maturity of a 14-year-old but she will be 21 tomorrow. A handsome con artist has convinced her that they will elope at her birthday party, but he's actually already married and is interested only in her portable assets (Grandmother's Diamonds).

Merle: My bags are packed. Everybody will be squishy by 11. We can sneak out then.

Aunt Olivia is wise to Merle and Con Artist. She hires Paul Drake to keep an eye on him at the party. Paul looks very handsome in his tux. He makes a phone call to Perry's home.

PM: Hi, Paul. How's the party?
PD: It died. So did the hostess.

The knife that did in Auntie is found in Merle's luggage and she is charged with murder. Merle's immaturity makes her a difficult client. D.A. Burger relishes that!

HB: If it please the court, Counsel is just employing his usual shotgun method here.

HB: Well, Your Honor, if Counselor really wants time to prepare for this hearing, I think the prosecution might exercise tolerance.
Judge: That's uncalled for, Mr. Burger.

DS: That certainly was a nasty crack Burger made when you asked for an adjournment.
PM: Nasty, but accurate.

Spectator yelling at witness: You filthy old man, you didn't have to tell it. You stupid, rotten, filthy man.
