The Case of the Guilty Clients

One of the things I appreciate about the TV show Perry Mason is the timelessness of the character Perry Mason and his moral rectitude. Some of the cultural snapshots, however, are jolting. "The Case of the Guilty Clients" starts with a divorce proceeding. He spanked his wife in front of guests when they were arguing over the way she grilled the steaks. We don't see this, of course. It's just brought up as part of the testimony. Whatever.

The other married couple on display was a test pilot and his wife who lived "in the sagebrush" while he was doing his thing in town. Mrs. Sagebrush was played by Barbara Stuart, who is a familiar face from the golden years of television. She got the best lines in last night's show.

For instance, she knew about her husband (the victim-to-be) being bought off to wreck the experimental plane he was testing.
Mrs. Sagebrush: That's one advantage of being ignored so much. You hear all sorts of things.

And she and the defendant-to-be (the spanker) were drinking together and discussing their mutual miseries.
Mrs. Sagebrush: If we were gonna do anything like that, you don't think we'd talk about it in front of a sub-cretin of a mechanic, do you?
