I did my usual lunchtime visit to the reflecting pool and groundskeepers were adding something black to the water. I asked about it. They were coloring the water with a deep water garden pond dye. It hides the unsightly sights that might crop up. The dye inhibits algae and provides shade, too. And here I am just finding out about it.
