Doxies

Did Hitchcock have a thing for dachshunds? We're watching some of his pre-U.S. films and at least two of them featured dachshunds. The dachshund in "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (the original, not the Stewart-Day version) is in the opening sequence and then vanishes.

In "Secret Agent" the dog played an important role, one that even stirred memories at our house. The dachshund senses that her master is in hire straits even though the man is miles away. She frantically scratches at a closed door and a couple of minutes later starts to howl. In a cut-away, we see her master being murdered. It was an affecting scene because we had a howling experience with our dachshund. LohMan was on the phone and Dixie, our dog, was about 10 feet away. Suddenly she started to howl. It was very uncharacteristic behavior.

When LohMan got off the phone, he relayed to me some shocking news (a suicide of one of his co-workers). We are convinced that Dixie sensed LohMan's despair.
