Panorama

A photographer stopped by the Missouri Capitol last week. He asked to take some pictures in the library and when he set up his tripod, I couldn't help but remark on its size. The legs  formed a pyramid that must have been eight feet across. The photographer was Tom Schiff of Cincinnati and he specializes in panoramic photos. He said the camera support on the tripod extended 20 feet, which is why the base was so broad.

Schiff's new book will feature public buildings (he mentioned capitols and courthouses) that he finds architecturally interesting. One thing I found interesting, apart from the tripod, is that he uses film. Imagine taking a picture and not knowing right away if it needed to be done over.

Of course, he's got the advantage of a lot of experience.
