Memory bank, February 7

Bonfire of the Vanities. Bring your cosmetics, mirrors, fancy dress, playing cards, questionable artwork and books -- anything that might tempt you to sin. Throw them on the bonfire. The most famous one was in Florence, Italy, on February 7, 1497, at the instigation of followers of Domincan priest Giromalo Savonarola.

Like a lot of charismatic folk, Savonarola fell from favor. In fact he was hung in chains and burned.
