The Republican Party was formed on February 28, 1854, at Ripon, Wisconsin. The GOP-affiliated Ripon Society is named for the birthplace. The first Republican elected President of the United States was Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Since 1854, the Republican candidate has won the presidency in 23 elections, the Democrat candidate in 16 elections.
