Memory bank, January 14

Today was the 58th anniversary of the first broadcast of "Today," NBC's morning show. We didn't have a TV in 1952, so my mother missed it. But I watched a lot of "Today" with her after we got a television. Dave Garroway was the host. He wore a bowtie and horn-rimmed glasses. And he closed every show by raising his hand, palm facing the camera, and saying "Peace."

I remember Jack Lescoulie and Frank Blair. Mr. Muggs, the chimp. Beryl Pfizer, Betsy Palmer. The people standing outdoors, hoping to be on camera. I remember people waving "I Like Ike" signs once.

Now, it's hard for me to fathom that many people start the day watching television.
