Mel Churchma

I was reading about NWMSU Bearcats' coach Mel Tjeerdsma being the Liberty Mutual Division II Coach of the Year and noticed the option to share the link via Blogger. Which I did (below). It doesn't look like much, does it?

Mel sounds like a most excellent fellow. He was a coach at Denison (Iowa) High School -- hometown of Donna Reed -- before he got into coaching at the collegiate level. The Bearcats were 0-11 the year he joined the staff. They've been 170-30 since. I think that is amazing. The right man in the right place.

I was at Maryville during a string of losing seasons (1966-69). Then Gladden Dye from Oak Park High School in Kansas City (my little sister's alma mater) came to town and things improved.
