The first open-heart surgery took place in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins University Hospital on November 29, 1944. The patient was a very ill "blue baby," Eileen Saxon. The surgeon was Alfred Blalock, assisted by his chief technician, Vivien Thomas. The surgery was successful, although the patient became cyanotic again within a few months. She died shortly before her third birthday.
