Memory bank, November 18

George Bernard Shaw was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925. He didn't want to accept it but his wife talked him into it. He wouldn't take the money but asked (November 18, 1926) that it be used to translate Swedish books into English.
I can forgive Alfred Nobel for having invented dynamite, but only a fiend in human form could have invented the Nobel Prize.
Fiend in human form? That would be Jim Jones, who induced his cult to commit mass suicide at their Jonestown enclave in Guyana, on November 18, 1978. A congressman from California was murdered as he investigated the activities of the cult. Leo Ryan, three journalists and a cult member trying to escape were gunned down in an airplane.

I remember hearing the first reports about Jonestown on November 19. It was a Sunday evening and a woman broadcaster (Jessica Savitch?) was the network anchor. Not from a script. As I recall it was kind of jumbled. Perhaps she had an earpiece and was relaying the information as it was coming in to her.
