Memory bank, November 16

Freight operator William Becknell left Franklin, Missouri, in September 1821 with a group of traders. They reached Santa Fe, New Mexico, on November 16, 1821, opening trade with Mexico and earning Becknell the sobriquet "Father of the Santa Fe Trail." He served two terms in the Missouri House of Representatives and moved to Texas in 1835, where he lived out the remainder of his life.
