The niceties of calling someone a liar

“Brother McAnally, of the Christian Advocate, says ‘that henceforth instead of vulgarly telling a man he lies just say he is guilty of a telegram.’”
– Liberty (Mo.) Weekly Tribune, March 21, 1862.

I saw something in my spam folder today from Mike Ellis. Subject: Legitimate inquiry. I didn't open this legitimate inquiry but I googled the name (like half of the world's English-speaking people, I know someone named Mike Ellis but the chances he would email me are 1 in 10,000) and the subject. My dear Mike, I would say that you are guilty of a telegram but this is 150 years later.

You are guilty of an email.
