Memory bank, September 25

Officer Eugene Lovely, age 23, was shot in the chest and killed while in pursuit on September 25, 1926. His plaque is part of the Missouri Law Enforcement Memorial across from the Capitol in Jefferson City. Most of the hundreds of names are police officers. Other agencies represented include the Highway Patrol, county sheriffs and deputies, city marshals, Department of Corrections and the FBI.

Without knowing anything about these men and women, when I scanned their names, the ones that seemed the saddest were the small-town marshals from the 19th century. Maybe it was because I assumed they didn't have much training and they probably didn't take the job expecting to put their lives on the line. If you use the control+F "find" feature and search for "marshal" on the link, you'll get some idea of what happened to those fellows.

The chart at the link above is not complete but it is extensive. I was surprised to see a McAlester, Oklahoma, officer listed on the memorial. Police Chief Otto Reed was one of four law-enforcement officers killed in a shootout at Union Station, Kansas City, in June 1933.

Law enforcement is a dangerous business any day of the week.
