Memory bank, September 2

All guns are silent, as the Japanese delegation boards the USS Missouri to sign the terms of surrender to end World War II. Among the Allied military personnel who witnessed the event was Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright IV. He was commander of the U.S. forces after General Douglas MacArthur was evacuated from the Philippines. General Wainwright was released from a prison camp in Manchuria only days before September 2, 1945.

General Wainwright died on September 2, 1953. 56 years ago. He was interred at Arlington National Cemetery, next to his father, a career Cavalry officer who died in service -- in the Philippines.

Not to be forgotten.
