Among the Allied military personnel who witnessed the event was Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright IV. He was commander of the U.S. forces after General Douglas MacArthur was evacuated from the Philippines. General Wainwright was released from a prison camp in Manchuria only days before September 2, 1945.
