It's wonderful to be here

July 20, 1969.

It's certainly a thrill.

If you're old enough, you remember the afternoon, evening and following day of the Apollo 11 moon landing. "The Eagle has landed." Six of us were in a Chevrolet heading south on U.S. 77 in south central Texas. I looked out the car window as we heard that announcement from Neil Armstrong over the car radio. There was a field of watermelons to the west.

It being a Sunday afternoon in mid-summer, lots of Americans were at the ballpark. The blogger Wezen-ball has a compilation of some baseball news from July 20, 1969. Your initial response to extraordinary news will probably depend on who you're with.

A couple of years ago I listened to an audiobook by Carrie Brown, Lamb in Love. The reason I chose it from the library's selection was the blurb on the box. Norris Lamb happens to see another resident of his small English village dancing by a water fountain in the moonlight. The impromptu dance is Vida Stephen's response to the news that men had landed on the moon.

In the first link above, Buzz Aldrin says that the most significant thing about the moon mission was the landing, rather than the moon walks. Another significant thing was they were able to leave.

Kottke.org is a blog with a good collection of links about Apollo 11. I'm relying on the Web for Apollo 11 reminiscing because we don't watch TV anymore. In my lifetime, though, I've seen a lot of TV worth watching. 1969 was a very good year for it.
