A name in the news

Having a first name that reached its popularity peak 100 years ago, I am somewhat nonplussed to see said name in the news. It's especially odd because these other women named "Hilda" are Hispanic and I think of the name as strictly Scandinavian, Dutch or German. I am named for my great-grandmother (pictured). She was Norwegian. Hilda Solis, a member of Congress from California, has been tapped to be the Secretary of Labor in the Obama administration. Hilda Suarez is the name of "Ugly Betty's" very attractive sister on the TV show. Che Guevara's first wife was a Peruvian woman, Hilda Gadea.

Hilda -- it's not just for datters anymore!
